Three Things I Love About Sales

There are three things I love about sales:

  1. Rejection

  2. Disappointment

  3. Frustration

Let’s not forget fear, anxiety, and doubt.

I just love the smell of some self-doubt in the morning. Said no one ever! ;)

As you can tell I’m joking about loving these parts of sales...

And while it’s taken me a few years to get there, I’m also OK with them because – as a salesperson – this is what we signed up for.

We sacrificed the security offered by other roles a long time ago.

Now comes the tough part, we must learn to embrace the discomfort...

It’s easier said than done. I know this will take time and sacrifice.

Sales is a blue-collar job dressed as white-collar. It may look like country clubs, fat expense accounts, and dinners out...but you and I know there’s more to it.

Sales is like a West Virginian coal miner. Punch in every day and swing that damn pick axe in the dark hoping you’ll strike something.

It's work. It's not easy. It's not always fun. It's work.

If you’re in sales I can guarantee that there will be:

Blood. Sweat. Tears. Frustration. Disappointment. Anger. Envy. Greed. Joy. Pain.

This is the game we signed up for…

Expecting these parts of sales to change would tear a hole in the fabric that is sales.

Only sales can hand you the highest of the highs and the lowest of the low, sometimes all within a matter of minutes! ;)

Expecting this part of the job to change would rob you and I of the great joy one can only feel after being rejected and experiencing failure time and time again to finally make strike gold with a sale. There’s no better feeling than that.

You can’t have the sweet without the sour.

Weekends mean nothing if you didn’t work during the week.

Sales success means nothing if you’ve never failed.

Embrace any rejection, disappointment, and frustration you’re experiencing now because one day (maybe even today) It will make that next sale that much better.
