The Top 3 Things I Learned from an Epic Sales Event

Location: Copa Vida Coffee Shop, San Diego, CA

Weather: 72 and Sunny (that was done on purpose)

This week I traveled from snowy Wisconsin to sunny California.

On a side note, people really are shocked that there’s snow on the ground in Wisconsin. It’s a great conversation starter! ;) One person even told me that he had only seen snow in movies...poor thing.

Why am I in San Diego?

I’m at my business coach, Craig Ballantyne’s Perfect Life Retreat. I’ve been in a hotel conference ballroom surrounded by high-level entrepreneurs, coaches, and trainers, and needless to say, it’s been an incredible two days.

  • I took a lot of notes.

  • I did my first FB Live video.

  • I had dinner with Pitbull’s (the rapper) personal trainer and cousin.

  • I handed out some copies of my book.

  • I drank a ton of Topo Chico sparkling water.

  • I met some industry titans that challenged my thinking and helped me raise my game up another level.

So in this week’s email, I’ll save you the thousands I invested, and the always friendly TSA pat-down to be here and give you my top 3 takeaways from this event.

1. The big mistake most salespeople are making!

Most salespeople/marketers are assuming what their prospect and customer wants.

Instead of trying to copy competitors or “beat” the competition why not spend more time talking to your customers?

When was the last time you called them and tried to learn about where they are right now on their journey?

Side Note: there’s a hilarious and R rated story that goes along with this thought. I won’t share it in email, but next time we chat, remind me and I’ll tell you all about it.

2. The 3 P’s to Lifelong Growth

The first P is to change the person. You have to change the story that you’re telling yourself. It starts by how you describe yourself. Do you think of yourself as “not good at sales” if you do, you won’t improve sales until you change this message? When you place yourself in a box, what are you holding yourself back from?

The second P is to change the plan. What do all sports teams, musicals, and pastors have in common? The follow a plan. If you don’t like where you’re at, change the plan. You could desperately want travel from Milwaukee to Chicago, but if you head north instead of south, you’ll never get there! Drive as fast as you want, all you end up doing is getting to the UP faster.

Change the plan.

The third P is punishment. Any change must have some level of punishment or consequence. There must be a deadline or some sort of tangible way to know that if this is not completed, a negative outcome occurs. Could be money, could be time, could be doing an activity

3. Three Laws of Billionaire Building

The first is to be the Oprah of your business. Focus on what you are exceptionally good at, and just focus on that. Oprah doesn’t worry about the lighting, caterer, and wardrobe. She just focuses on what she does best...giving cars away!

What are you doing that’s not your job?

The second is to build a fence around yourself from distractions. If you’re distracted by your phone, don’t leave it within arms reach, put it in another room! Build a fence around yourself so you can focus on what you're exceptionally good at it. We don’t find the time, we make time, and most people could make extra hours by ruthlessly cutting their distractions.

The third is to take fast action. Success loves speed so be better at executing...boy, did I need to hear this. I’ve procrastinated on projects, and programs and this really hit me in the feels.

I hope you liked these little nuggets of gold! I took several pages of notes and met countless people that inspired and motivated me.

Happy Selling.
